Introducing our Gym M.O.M. (Member of the Month) for April 2023 … Nic Vasquez!

It’s somewhat of a bitter sweet moment to honor Nic since it’s his last month with us, but we had to make sure we honored him before he left!

Nic’s work ethic and consistency are what stands out the most (aside from his adorable dog Zeus!) and what makes this months honors an easy choice. Nic also has a strong, competitive edge which is contagious to some (coaches included).

We’ve seen firsthand how his approach has influenced and motivated those around him! That’s something we highly value since we are all about cultivating a healthy environment of welcoming members, driven by a passion to work hard!

Join us in congratulating Nic and wishing him the best of luck on his new venture!

Learn more about Nic below:

Q: What made you decide to start functional fitness training?
I thought functional fitness would be the best form of exercise to help me reach my goals and promote lifelong wellness. I wasn’t wrong.

Q: Are you a student/working professional/both? What do you do for a living?
I’m a Senior Industrial Hygienist and the Boston Division Manager for a large engineering consulting firm. I started our Boston office in 2020 and I’m responsible for directing business development and project management for all industrial hygiene, environmental health, and safety (EHS) projects in New England.

Q: What are your hobbies/interests outside of the gym?
I enjoy photography, hiking, mountaineering, snowboarding, backcountry snowboarding, and backpacking.

Q: What are some of your favorite movements (name up to three)?
Bench press, bench press, and bench press… just kidding… kind of… besides bench press, I enjoy dead lifts and squats.

Q: What are your least favorite movements?
Buck furpees, thrusters, and overhead press.

Q: What movements do you want to improve at?
Overhead squats

Q: What advice do you have for someone considering our gym?
Just do it. The community is friendly and inclusive and the coaches cater to people at all fitness levels.

Q: What’s your favorite “cheat” food?
I typically eat pretty clean but I also don’t intentionally avoid foods for any reason other than I don’t want them.

Q: What is your guilty pleasure?
I plead the 5th!

Q: Do you have any nicknames?
Well my nickname is, in fact, Nic… but my friends also call me Nico, Nicoli, and Nicky Clicks.

Q: Tell us an interesting fact that we probably don’t know about you!
I’m able to identify ripe citrus fruits at the grocery store by sight alone.

What is the March of Dimes? The March of Dimes is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the health of mothers and babies, with a focus on preventing birth defects, premature birth, and infant mortality. Learn more about the March of Dimes here. Why is it important to us? We are excited to host a workout in support of the March of Dimes and the South Shore Hospital NICU team. My sister-in-law, Amanda Dougherty, and my nephew, Owen Dougherty, received a lot of care during Owen's premature and traumatic birth. Amanda and her family will be walking on the SSH NICU/SCN team in the March for Babies walk on May 9th, and we would love to support her by donating to the cause and helping other families in need. When's the charity class? We would love for everyone to come join us, no matter your fitness level, in support of this great cause. The class will be hosted on Sunday, April 12th, at 11 am. T-shirts will also be available for purchase as a preorder up until March 27th. All proceeds from registration of this event and profits from all shirts purchased will be donated to the SSH NICU/SCN team under Amanda Dougherty. Donate and Jump into Class If you would like to donate more, you can go directly to Amanda’s page and donate here.

Strength expression is our ability to show or utilize the strength we have. We call it expression because in the world of lifting, CrossFit, functional fitness, or training, our ability to show that strength varies. Even though our potential strength is the same, we are not always able to fully express it the way we want. Whether that is hitting a max back squat, doing heavy thrusters in a CrossFit style workout, or hitting that heavy clean complex when olympic lifting, we will not always be able to hit our maxes, this is because of factors outside of just our strength itself.
