Introducing our Gym M.O.M. (Member of the Month) for November, 2021 … Sean Roche !

As a coach, you couldn’t ask for a more humble athlete like you’ll find with Sean. Sean is one of our most experienced, advanced athletes, but you wouldn’t know that based on his humble attitude and approach while in class. Sean never hesitates when it comes to taking to coaching, or modifying a work out to fit his goals while achieving the stimulus we seek.

Sean is patient and consistent, even adhering to customized plans to build strength / muscle during quarantine. We are super proud to have Sean as an athlete / member and to highlight him as a person!

Learn more about Sean below!

Q: What made you decide to start functional fitness training?
I watched some of the old crossfit documentaries and was very excited to try the sport. I lived a few blocks away from Crossfit on the Hill (COTH) and I was a long-time lurker. The documentary finally gave me the courage to give it a shot!

Q: Are you a student/working professional/both? What do you do for a living?
I work from home for Okta. I write business cases for our customers to fund large transactions.

Q: What are your hobbies/interests outside of the gym?
Eating carbs. Drinking carbs. Playing with baby Jemma. Going to fun coffee shops with my wife, Elaina. Attending Boston College football games. I also spend leisure time on topics related to investment management and the stock market.

Q: What are some of your favorite movements (name up to three)?
Clean and Jerk! Deadlift. Child pose. I wouldn’t mind trying the Assault Bike from the floor (although you haven’t programmed this, yet).

Q: What are your least favorite movements?
Sit-ups. DB step overs are a close second.

Q: What movements do you want to improve at?
Snatch

Q: What advice do you have for someone considering our gym?
You’ll never feel ‘prepared’ to try your first class so just do it! You live one life, don’t spend it overthinking.

Q: What’s your favorite “cheat” food?
Marshmallow peeps. It’s an everyday food. Sometimes I “cheat” every morning for a week!

Q: What’s your spirit animal and why?
Horse. This conclusion is as simple as that it aligns with the Chinese zodiac. I find the description apt: The horse is the guide of passion and drive. It’s incredibly productive and goal-oriented.

Q: What is your guilty pleasure?
B-movies. To name a few…. Hobo with a Shotgun. The Room. Troll 2 (there was never a Troll 1, they thought more people would watch it if it was advertised as a sequel)

Q: Do you have any nicknames?
No

Q: An interesting fact that we probably don’t know about you!
I have native fluency in Spanish. My mom was one of 7 siblings born in Chile, the only one who moved to the States.

What is the March of Dimes? The March of Dimes is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the health of mothers and babies, with a focus on preventing birth defects, premature birth, and infant mortality. Learn more about the March of Dimes here. Why is it important to us? We are excited to host a workout in support of the March of Dimes and the South Shore Hospital NICU team. My sister-in-law, Amanda Dougherty, and my nephew, Owen Dougherty, received a lot of care during Owen's premature and traumatic birth. Amanda and her family will be walking on the SSH NICU/SCN team in the March for Babies walk on May 9th, and we would love to support her by donating to the cause and helping other families in need. When's the charity class? We would love for everyone to come join us, no matter your fitness level, in support of this great cause. The class will be hosted on Sunday, April 12th, at 11 am. T-shirts will also be available for purchase as a preorder up until March 27th. All proceeds from registration of this event and profits from all shirts purchased will be donated to the SSH NICU/SCN team under Amanda Dougherty. Donate and Jump into Class If you would like to donate more, you can go directly to Amanda’s page and donate here.

Strength expression is our ability to show or utilize the strength we have. We call it expression because in the world of lifting, CrossFit, functional fitness, or training, our ability to show that strength varies. Even though our potential strength is the same, we are not always able to fully express it the way we want. Whether that is hitting a max back squat, doing heavy thrusters in a CrossFit style workout, or hitting that heavy clean complex when olympic lifting, we will not always be able to hit our maxes, this is because of factors outside of just our strength itself.
