July 2020's gym mom, Nate

July’s Gym “M.O.M.”

R3VIVE Fitness July 9, 2020 Member of the Month

Introducing our Gym M.O.M (Member of the Month) for July 2020 … Nathan Swire!

Nate has constantly showed up for our outdoor workouts and our remote classes over the last few months, which means a lot to us considering all that’s been going on. Nate is also humble and great to coach when it comes to recognizing and addressing weaknesses. He’s always considering the “smart” option, thinking in terms of what’s best for the long run vs short term. Continue reading more about Nate and be sure to congratulate him when you see him!

Q: What made you decide to start functional fitness training?
I first picked up functional fitness while I was stationed in Europe with the U.S. military. I was drawn first and foremost to the sense of community at the gyms, which was something I had been missing when doing solo training, and it was a lot more fun than my military workouts. I stuck with it because I really enjoy growing and learning as an athlete, particularly because functional fitness forces me to address and improve on my weak points.

Q: Are you a student/working professional/both? What do you do for a living?
I’m in my first year as a practicing lawyer. I currently work as a clerk for a judge who sits on the Federal District Court of Massachusetts.

Q: What are your hobbies/interests outside of the gym?
I read a lot, especially history, write occasionally, and I’m trying to learn how to cook more than the basics.

Q: What are some of your favorite movements (name up to three)?
Squat, Row, Clean

Q: What are your least favorite movements?
Wall-climb, Overhead carry, Thruster

Q: What movements do you want to improve at?
My overhead and front rack are both weak due to poor shoulder mobility, which I am continually working to improve.

Q: What advice do you have for someone considering our gym?
Show up consistently and get to know everyone! Consistency is the key to real improvement, and if you’re having fun at the workouts you’re more likely to want to go.

Q: What’s your favorite “cheat” food?
Bagel breakfast sandwich with all the greasy  bacon.

Q: What’s your spirit animal and why?
Leaving the house to buy overpriced coffee from the cafe around the corner when we have a coffeemaker at home.

Q: What is your guilty pleasure?
None, can’t waste time feeling guilty, just do what makes you happy.

Q: Do you have any nicknames?
“Out-the-wireSwire.” So named because when I was deployed to Afghanistan, on my very first night of moving into a new base I got turned around and accidentally wandered over to the Afghan side of the compound, past the “wire” separating it from the American side. I figured it out pretty quick, but not before I was spotted and earned the nickname.

Q: An interesting fact that we probably don’t know about you!
Some of you already know this, but July is my last month with R3vive! My wife and I are moving to Washington D.C. in August because she’s starting her medical Fellowship, and I’m working remotely. I may be back for a few weeks in the fall, though.
